Sophocles' Oedipus Trilogy

by Sophocles

Oedipus Rex ie the first in the trilogy is one of the most powerful dramas I've had the chance to read. It defines the term 'epic' both in scale and emotion; its narrative is grand and gripping, and the manner which events unfold grips you by the leg-sand makes you weak, so when Oedipus' truth is finally revealed to him, we are almost as crashed as he is. Unfortunately the other two parts do not hold a candle to the first's sheer brilliance. In olden days, these plays has to be written in three parts for competition, and since the firstitself has most of the juice, the second and third become inferior like many pf the movie sequels nowadays.
