Howard’s humorous Breckinridge Elkins is the tale of a not-so-smart cowboy.

For some Gold Rush tales, not many can beat Bret Harte. His Luck of Roaring Camp and Tennessee’s Partner are classics. O.Henry’s Heart of the West is a short story by a master of short fiction. And for the reader of “leisure Westerns,” there’s no one who can compete with Max Brand, who is perhaps the 3rd most prolific writer in history, with 500 novels, 300 of which are Westerns. Ronicky Doone is a good one to start with.
